Both management and staff must agree with the performance appraisal protocol from Day One! Not run around using band-aid to fix the leaks and frustrations.

When will these “experts” ever learn?

A system that coughs out unassailable hard numbers is the way to go. Is your team member a One or a Ten? That includes your “managers”.

Many HR and Hiring Managers are reluctant – or so it seems – to use a model that spews out hard numbers. One can only wonder why?

Can people change?

This article assumes we can change people. An enormous task.

In a fast-paced business environment with looming KPIs to meet, do you have the time and resources? And even if you can change a person, how long will it last before he reverts to his norm? Back to the original challenge: Can you change a person?

Here is a simple test. Have you tried changing your spouse to suit your likes? Can you change?

Nobody will change unless they wish to change. That’s the reality!

Where does that leave employers and managers—and co-workers? Most times, co-workers don’t get to decide who to employ. That’s the employers’ and hiring managers’ turf.

Are there easier solutions to get co-workers to contribute their fair share? A definite yes!

The best way forward to get staff to contribute their fair share is to front-load: recruit, select, review, and keep people who already possess the attributes you desire. As the saying goes, you can’t make lemon juice without lemon. And here is a little extra: you can’t employ lemons and hope to build a best-in-class team.

The question that begs is: How do you build a best-in-class team?

A follow up question.

After you’ve employed people who you think are the best, how do you review their performance? An enlightened management would know that co-workers have a crucial part to play in performance reviews.

You’ll find the answers in these two books—the first editions published in 2014 and revised in 2018/2019—but as relevant today as they were back then.
